The Colossus of Rhodes was the shortest standing monument of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. The Colossus was built over the harbor of Rhodes to be a monument to the Roman Empire and a awe-inspiring welcome into the port city of Rhodes. Immediately upon it's completion, the designer realized it's fatal structural flaws, and chose to die at his own hand than face the punishment he would receive when it inevitably fell. Almost as soon as it went up, it came down. This icon that was meant to be the greatest grandest welcome into the empire turned out to be one of it's greatest embarrassments and contributed to their financial downfall. It became a symbol of governmental folly instead of triumph.
Lady Liberty was modeled after the Colossus of Rhodes, meant to be a beacon of welcoming hope to the outside world - a picture of the glittering American Dream. But maybe everything is not as glamorous as we were taught in school. Maybe "facts" were given to us with some wiggle room. So how is one supposed to face the world to day, this insurmountable mountain of red tape and societal norms? What power does any one individual have to change the path that we are barreling down together? One can feel helpless. But there is beauty in life, there is beauty in challenges, and there is beauty in pushing back to demand the country you love to do better and reach higher and correct the wrongs of our past.
